The 2011 National Retail Federations survey on “back-to-school shopping”, suggested that approximately one third of respondents planned to shop online, up from 28.6% last year. The survey also showed that the number of people that would compare online shopping with shopping traditional stores will increase from 23.2% in 2010, to 30.7% this year .

Rachael Hayes, Public Relations manager for Mixwall said that online shopping had a price advantage over shopping in brick and mortar shops: “Slumping home values and high unemployment have put a dampner on consumer sentiment in recent years, so it’s not surprising that parents heading out to buy school items are looking to cut expense where they can”. “With the extra burden of tuition, college students and their parents are slightly more likely to change their consumption plans this year due to the economy and will compensate by doing more comparative shopping online. Online stores don’t need to endure high rents that brick and mortar shops do.”

According to Mrs. Hayes, additional advantages over traditional shopping trips were, ‘not having to leave their house’ and ‘more choice’.

“Though there are cars, people have to pay for petrol, which is also part of the expenditure. Besides, more and more people are willing to stay at home. Without leaving house is a better choice for them,” said Mrs. Hayes. “There are more options for parents and children to shop online. Traditional shopping is subjected to the size of the store, bigger shops, and more varieties.”
